O'Brien guitar bridge vacuum clamp, top view

Designed with Robbie O’Brien of O’Brien Guitars · Built by Cariko in Rogersville, Missouri

Glue bridges with even pressure: no deep-throat clamps, no cauls, no clamp marks

Gluing a bridge the traditional way means reaching through the soundhole, setting a caul, and hoping the pressure is even all the way out to the wings. Too much pressure and you mark the top; too little and the wings lift. The Bridge Vacuum Clamp presses the entire bridge down evenly from outside the guitar, and nothing can slip while the glue sets.

Why vacuum instead of clamps

  • Even pressure across the whole bridge, wings included
  • Nothing goes through the soundhole and no interior caul is needed
  • Alignment stays exactly where you set it
  • Fits steel-string and classical bridges (interior 8 7/16" × 2 7/8")

What you’ll need: a vacuum source

The clamp connects to standard 1/4" vacuum tubing and works with any vacuum source in the 1–3 CFM range.

  • Already have an air compressor? A venturi vacuum generator will run it.
  • Already have a vacuum press for veneering? You’re set.
  • Buying a pump? We recommend a continuous-run, oil-free pump. It runs quietly through a full glue-up with no oil to maintain or contaminate your work. The Excel 1 Continuous Run Vacuum System is a good example.

Built to last

  • Lightweight, durable plastic frame, guaranteed against breakage in normal use
  • Flexible silicone membrane for uniform pressure (replaceable, $24)
  • Airtight neoprene bottom seal
  • Stainless steel hardware

How to use

  1. Position the bridge and hold briefly until the glue begins to tack.
  2. Apply the clamp and check alignment.
  3. Clamp for 10 minutes, clean off squeeze-out, then reclamp for 20–30 minutes.

The clamp does the job as intended. however the vacuum pump never turns off. So there is a slight vacuum leek in the clamp. Is there a way to find the leak?

Clamp works very well. Only small thing is you need to remove the clamp after about 10 minutes to clean up any glue squeeze out, which is just the way it goes with any vacuum clamp.

love it. Simple, straightforward, easy to use, and best of all, the membrane oi clear so you can see what you're doing and watch for squeeze out.

It doesn’t work because the seal is not engineered for a top with a radius. Highly disappointed and hopefully this can be made right. Thanks

Jon, thank you for the feedback, and I’m sorry the clamp isn’t sealing for you. The seal is designed to conform to a radiused top, so something specific is going on here, and occasionally a clamp goes out with a bad seal. I’ve emailed you directly to work through it. One way or another, I’ll make it right. — Dan

This vac press worked perfect the first time. Have used it on a few projects
From Martin D and N size guitars I make and on a Martin size ukulele I make. Much better than the old clamp way of doing things. I would say the only advantage of the clamp method is that the glue squeeze out is much easier to clean up than the vac press. But the advantage of the vac press out weighs this. I bought my press through o briens and the process could not have been simpler

I used the bridge vacuum clamp for the first time on my latest guitar and it worked great! The quality of the tool is outstanding.

Very straightforward and easy to use. Takes away a lot of the clunkiness (eg manoeuvring clamps) when gluing a bridge. I’ve found it particularly useful when using hot hide glue where the job needs to be done quickly and where there’s no room for hold-ups.
